Sales salaries
Director of Sales Salary in 2026
The short answer
US sales directors in tech earn a median base of $170,000 and median OTE of $315,000, according to RepVue's trailing-year salary reports (October 2026).
Built In reports an average base of $154,000 and average total cash of $264,504 for the same title (listed as Sales Director). The two sources disagree by about $50,000 on total pay — a real gap, but much narrower than at the sales manager level.
Director is the first level where the job is unambiguously management of managers or of a region, which is why the sources converge more than they do for the loosely defined 'sales manager' title.
OTE is pay at target against a team number. Director pay is almost entirely leveraged on team attainment, so the spread between a good year and a bad year is wider than the spread between sources.
Reported salary figures, by source
Every figure links to the source that published it. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether variable pay is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure. We do not blend these into an average of averages.
| Source | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| RepVue | $170,000 base / $315,000 OTE | Median base and median on-target earnings, tech-sales oriented, trailing-year salary reports · as of 24 Oct 2026 |
| Built In | $154,000 base / $264,504 total | Average base and average total cash compensation, US tech employers, listed as Sales Director · as of 2026 |
Why director-level sources are closer than manager-level ones
The $315,000-versus-$264,504 gap is about half the size of the sales manager disagreement, in proportional terms. The reason is definition: 'director of sales' is a harder title to give loosely.
- A clearer population. Director roles exist mostly at companies large enough to have a sales hierarchy, which filters out the small-company roles that drag manager-level averages down.
- Median versus average persists. RepVue's median against Built In's average still explains part of the gap — director pay has a left tail of small-company roles that pulls the average below the median.
What a director is paid to own
A sales director typically owns a region or a segment: several frontline managers, twenty to fifty sellers, and a number that rolls up to the VP. The $315,000 median OTE is leveraged on that whole organisation's attainment, which is why director plans carry the largest accelerators in the sales hierarchy.
The pre-sales organisation at director level
At this scale the pre-sales organisation has its own leadership. If you are building out both sides of the team, our sales engineering manager salary data and the SE-to-AE ratio benchmarks cover the pre-sales half of the structure.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a director of sales make in the US?
RepVue reports a median base of $170,000 and median OTE of $315,000 for tech sales directors (October 2026). Built In reports an average base of $154,000 and average total cash of $264,504. OTE is pay at full team quota, not guaranteed earnings.
What is the path from sales manager to director?
Director roles typically require having managed managers or owned a region. The pay step is meaningful: RepVue's medians move from $280,000 OTE at manager level to $315,000 at director level.
Do sales directors earn more than enterprise account executives?
At target, yes on RepVue's medians — $315,000 against $280,000 OTE — but the top enterprise AEs at high-growth companies regularly out-earn directors through accelerators, which is why some senior ICs never move into management.
