Sales Engineer Salary in the San Francisco Bay Area

By Charlie Simpson, Head of compensation researchLast updated: Sample size: n = 58 of a national dataset of 1,749Methodology

The short answer

Sales engineers in the San Francisco Bay Area earn a median base salary of $195,000 — the highest of any US metro in our 2026 data, and 34.5% above our national pre-sales median base.

That is a premium of 56.1% over the $124,900 national median annual wage for sales engineers reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), which covers all industries and all locations.

We have not yet published a sourced Bay Area OTE, so we do not print one as fact. Scaling our national median OTE by the local base index (1.34 (modelled from our national dataset)×) models Bay Area total compensation at about $276,000 (modelled from our national dataset) at 100% attainment. Treat that as modelled from the national dataset plus the local base index, not as an observed metro median.

Bay Area pay is concentrated in enterprise SaaS, cloud infrastructure and AI vendors selling technical products to technical buyers, which is why the metro carries a genuine premium rather than only a cost-of-living adjustment.

Reported salary figures, by source

Every third-party figure links to the source that published it. Our own row is last. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether commission is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure.

Why published Bay Area numbers disagree

Bay Area figures published elsewhere range widely for the same job title, and the reasons are structural rather than a disagreement about the market.

  • Base versus total compensation. Aggregators mix the two freely. A base-only median and an OTE median for the same metro can differ by a third, so the two are not comparable even when both are correct.
  • Equity is counted inconsistently. Bay Area packages carry more equity than any other US market. Sources that annualise RSUs report much larger numbers than sources reporting cash only. Our base figure is cash base, and excludes equity entirely.
  • "San Francisco" means different geographies. Some sources price the city, others the whole Bay Area including the Peninsula and South Bay. Our figure covers the metro area, which is where most enterprise pre-sales roles actually sit.

We publish one sourced Bay Area figure — the metro median base. The bands below are MODELLED: our national seniority bands scaled by the Bay Area base index of 1.34 (modelled from our national dataset)×. They are directional, not observed metro medians.

Cost of living: what a Bay Area offer is really worth

Start with the premium. Our Bay Area median base of $195,000 sits 56.1% above the BLS national median of $124,900$70,100 in cash. That is the largest metro premium in our dataset.

California income tax takes part of it back. At these income levels a California resident pays a marginal state rate of 9.3% on top of federal tax, against 0% in Texas, Florida and Washington. Against an Austin offer, that state-tax load is the whole gap on the marginal dollar before housing enters the comparison.

Housing takes more. Bay Area rents and house prices are the highest in the country and are not indexed to the pay premium, so the same package buys materially less space than it does in Austin or a remote market.

The comparison that matters is against the offers a Bay Area candidate can actually accept instead. Our remote (US) median base is $168,000, so the Bay Area premium is 16.1% ($27,000) — real, but thinner than the headline against the national wage figure suggests once state tax and housing are netted off.

Take a Bay Area role for the density of vendors, the size of the deals and the speed of the market. On take-home alone, a remote offer at our national band is competitive with it.

San Francisco sales engineer jobs

We recruit pre-sales roles in the Bay Area directly, and every search we are running is listed on our jobs page. We are not trying to match the job boards on inventory — each listing is a live mandate.

Base, variable and the Bay Area split

The sourced figure on this page is the median base of $195,000, drawn from Bay Area pre-sales offers between January and August 2026. We have not published a sourced Bay Area OTE, so the total-compensation figures below are modelled rather than observed.

Modelled Bay Area OTE is $276,000 (modelled from our national dataset) — our national median OTE scaled by the local base index of 1.34 (modelled from our national dataset)×. Against the sourced base that implies a 71/29 (modelled from our national dataset) base-to-variable split at 100% attainment.

Read the modelled numbers as a planning band. Where a Bay Area candidate quotes a total package, the base is the part we can benchmark with confidence; the variable element depends on the quota plan far more than on the metro.

The Bay Area against the other major metros

Delta and premium are computed from each metro's median base against the $124,900 US median annual wage for sales engineers reported by the BLS (May 2025). Every figure in this table is a sourced base, not a modelled one.

Metro base figures are ours; both comparison columns are derived from them, so they appear together or not at all.

Read this alongside the national sales engineer compensation data, which is the benchmark every cut on this page is measured against.

The other markets we track: Los Angeles bands, Denver pay and Atlanta pre-sales pay. Each is cut from the same dataset, so the gaps between them are comparable.

If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer pay page is the closer comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sales engineer make in San Francisco?

Median base for a Bay Area sales engineer is $195,000 in our 2026 dataset — 56.1% above the $124,900 national median annual wage reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. We have not yet published a sourced Bay Area OTE; scaling the national OTE by the local base index models total compensation at roughly $276,000.

Is San Francisco the highest-paying market for sales engineers?

Yes, on base salary. The Bay Area median base of $195,000 is the highest metro in our data, ahead of New York at $185,000 and Austin at $165,000.

How much more does the Bay Area pay than a remote US role?

Our remote (US) median base is $168,000, so the Bay Area pays 16.1% more — $27,000 in cash, before California income tax and Bay Area housing costs are netted off.

What is the base-to-variable split for a Bay Area sales engineer?

On the modelled Bay Area total of $276,000 against the sourced base of $195,000, the implied split is about 71/29 — in line with the national pre-sales pattern rather than a local anomaly.

Pre-sales job titles, and which ones mean the same thing

Sales engineer, solutions consultant and solutions engineer are usually the same job under different names; solutions architect and technical account manager are genuinely different roles.

Pre-sales job titles compared: function, quota ownership, deal stage and US national median base
RoleWhat they doOwns quota?StageMedian base (US national)
Sales EngineerTechnical validation during the saleSupportsPre-sales$145,000
Solutions ConsultantSame function; common in enterprise software and servicesSupportsPre-sales$148,000
Solutions EngineerSame function; common in SaaS and infrastructureSupportsPre-sales$155,000
Solutions ArchitectDesigns the technical solution; deeper, less deal-facingNoPre/post$170,000
Technical Account ManagerOwns the technical relationship after the saleUsually notPost-sales$135,000

The three synonym pages carry the same underlying occupation, so read them together: sales engineer salary, solutions engineer salary and solutions consultant salary. The two genuinely different roles are solutions architect and technical account manager.

Median base figures in this table are US national medians across all metros, so they will be lower than the headline figure on a metro-specific page such as New York.
