Role summary
“As a Sales Engineer at [Company], you own the technical win. You'll work alongside an account executive across [segment] deals, running discovery, tailored demos and proofs of concept in the customer's own environment — and you'll be the person the buyer's engineers trust when the architecture question comes up.”
Responsibilities
- Own the technical win: discovery, custom demo, proof of concept and security review.
- Scope and defend PoC success criteria with the buyer's engineering team.
- Partner with the account executive on qualification, MEDDPICC and close planning.
- Feed field requirements back into product with evidence, not anecdotes.
- Build reusable demo assets and enablement for the wider pre-sales team.
Requirements
- 3+ years in a pre-sales or customer-facing technical role (adjust by level).
- Demonstrable ownership of at least one enterprise proof of concept end-to-end.
- Comfortable in the buyer's stack — not just your own product's happy path.
- Can hold an architecture conversation and a commercial one in the same call.

Based on our placement data
The lines that cost you candidates
In our own debriefs, the three most common reasons strong pre-sales candidates skip an advert are: no comp band, a quota attached to the SE rather than the pod, and a requirements list that reads like a support engineer's.
Advertised OTE medians sit around $197k while accepted packages land near $205k. Advertising the accepted number is the cheapest conversion improvement available to you.
Computed from our own placement and offer records.
Read this alongside the national sales engineer salary data, which is the benchmark every cut on this page is measured against.
If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer salary page is the closer comparison.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
