Sales engineer recruiters: how to pick one, and how to brief them
Pre-sales is a small, specialist market. Most generalist tech recruiters work it like an account-executive search, which is why shortlists arrive full of solution architects who have never carried a number.

What a specialist sales engineer recruiter does differently
Three things separate a pre-sales specialist from a generalist tech recruiter. First, they screen technically: can the candidate run discovery, scope a proof of concept and hold a security review, not just demo a product. Second, they know the levelling — the difference between a mid-level SE, a senior who closes unaided, and a solutions architect who has never been on a commission plan. Third, they price the role against real offer data before the search starts, so you are not four weeks in before discovering the band is wrong.
What sales engineer recruitment costs
Contingency search in pre-sales is normally quoted as a percentage of first-year base or of OTE — always confirm which, because on a package with a 80/20–85/15 split those are very different numbers. Retained and engaged searches trade a smaller total fee for committed capacity and a shortlist deadline. For a single SE hire, contingency is usually the right instrument; for building a team or replacing a leader, engaged search is.
How to brief a sales engineer search
The brief that fills fastest answers five questions in writing: what the SE will own in a deal, how many account executives they cover, the base and OTE band with the split, the quota basis and its recent attainment, and the interview process with named stages. If you cannot answer the attainment question, expect strong candidates to discount your OTE entirely — median actual attainment across the plans we see is 61.4%.
How to judge the shortlist
| Signal | What good looks like | What it usually means when it's missing |
|---|---|---|
| Technical screen notes | Specific evidence: stack, deal size, POC length, security reviews handled | The recruiter is matching on job titles |
| Compensation expectation with split | Base, OTE and the candidate's current attainment | You will lose the hire at offer stage on base |
| Motivation for the move | A concrete push factor you can address | The candidate is a passive name, not a live mover |
| Counter-offer risk flagged | Named risk plus a plan for it | Expect a resignation to be reversed |
Working with us
We recruit pre-sales exclusively, and we run every search against the same compensation dataset this site publishes — so the band is agreed before outreach starts rather than renegotiated after the first three candidates decline. Typical search runs about four weeks from brief to offer.
Based on our placement data
Why pre-sales searches stall
The band you advertise moves time-to-fill more than any other single lever. In our placement data the curve is steep between $150k and $185k, and the accepted median OTE for the role nationally is $205,000 against a median base of $145,000.
| Advertised band | Median time to fill |
|---|---|
| Under $188k OTE | 61 days |
| $188k–$205k OTE | 44 days |
| $205k–$293k OTE | 33 days |
| $293k+ OTE | 26 days |
A search briefed below the market median is not a recruiting problem — it is a pricing problem, and no agency can fix it with more outreach.
Computed from our own placement and offer records.
Read this alongside the national sales engineer compensation data, which is the benchmark every cut on this page is measured against.
If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer pay page is the closer comparison.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
