Solutions Engineer Salary in 2026
The short answer
A solutions engineer in the United States earns a median base salary of $155,000, with total compensation of Our own data for this cut is not yet published. once bonus and commission are included.
Published figures range from $123,284 (ZipRecruiter, base) to $189,950 (Glassdoor, total compensation for the singular spelling “solution engineer”), so the spread is largely a base-versus-total-comp difference plus a spelling split.
Solutions engineer is the same pre-sales function as sales engineer; the title is most common at SaaS and infrastructure vendors. It is a different job from solutions architect, which designs the technical solution and is less deal-facing.
Third-party figures below are linked to their source. Our own base median rests on 327 verified offers and our OTE median on 423, all collected between 1 January and 8 August 2026; cuts with a sample too small to stand behind are shown as not yet published rather than estimated.
— Our own data for this cut is not yet published. Figures shown with an em-dash come from our own dataset and are withheld until the sample is large enough to publish. Third-party figures on this page are attributed to their source.

| Not in the sample | Support engineers, inside-sales engineers, post-sales architects and non-enterprise vendors. Official statistics such as the BLS figure quoted on this page cover all sales engineers in all industries, which is a wider population and a lower median. |

Reported salary figures, by source
Every third-party figure links to the source that published it. Our own row is last. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether commission is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure.

Why the published solutions engineer numbers disagree
Three causes, in order of how much of the gap they explain.
- Base versus total compensation. ZipRecruiter's $123,284 and Salary.com's $126,327 are base figures and agree closely with each other. Glassdoor's $169,706 and $189,950 are total compensation. The two clusters are consistent once you add a 30% variable component.
- Singular and plural spellings are separate aggregator pages. Glassdoor publishes $169,706 for “solutions engineer” and $189,950 for “solution engineer”. Same job, two auto-generated pages, two samples. Treat the difference as noise, not signal.
- Geography inside the sample. Indeed's California figure of $154,127 is a state cut, not a national one. Bay Area and NYC concentrations pull any national average upward unless the source controls for location.

How much does a solutions engineer make?
A solutions engineer makes a median base salary of $155,000 and total compensation of Our own data for this cut is not yet published. in 2026, with published third-party estimates spanning $123,284 to $189,950 depending on whether the source counts variable pay.
Expanding on that: base pay is the reliable part of the number. On a typical 70/30 pre-sales split, a solutions engineer on a $130,000 base carries roughly $56,000 of variable pay at full attainment. Whether they receive it depends on their team's quota attainment, not their own performance alone — which is why comparing two offers on base first, then on plan quality, gives a truer picture than comparing OTE.
Equity is the third component and the least comparable. At a public company it is an RSU grant with a knowable value; at a Series B vendor it is an option grant whose value is a bet. Neither appears in most published salary figures.
Entry-level solutions engineer salary
An entry-level solutions engineer starts at a median base of $155,000 with median OTE of $219,000 (modelled from our national dataset) in our dataset — the first rung of the ladder in the table above, before the senior step.
Two things move a first offer more than anything on the CV. The first is the vendor's deal size: a solutions engineer supporting six-figure enterprise deals starts above one supporting mid-market self-serve, because the technical evaluation is heavier. The second is where the person came from — support, implementation and QA backgrounds land at the bottom of the band, while a working engineer moving into pre-sales usually lands at the top of it.
What almost never moves a first offer is a certification. At entry level employers pay for demo ability and a credible technical story, and test both in the panel.
Solutions engineer salary by state (California, Texas)
State-level pay is the most searched cut of this role and the least reliable in published data: Indeed's California figure of $154,127 is a state average across every employer size and stage, not a like-for-like band.
We benchmark by metro rather than by state, because a Bay Area offer and a Fresno offer share a state and nothing else. Our published metro cuts are New York, the San Francisco Bay Area, Boston, Austin and fully remote US. We do not publish California-wide or Texas-wide medians, so the table below shows those cuts as not yet published rather than an averaged number we cannot stand behind.
For a state read, use the nearest metro cut: for California use the San Francisco Bay Area band, and for Texas use Austin.
Solutions engineer salary by company type
Company type explains more of the spread between two solutions engineer offers than either title or state. We describe it qualitatively here because we do not publish per-employer medians.
Large public vendors pay a strong base, a plan that pays out predictably, and RSUs with a knowable value — the safest total number. Late-stage private vendors pay a comparable base, a more aggressive plan, and options whose value is a bet. Early-stage vendors pay below both on base and make up the gap in equity and scope, and their quotas are often unproven, which makes their OTE the least reliable figure on the offer letter.
Hardware and infrastructure vendors sit below software at the same level, and consultancies that use the solutions engineer title for delivery work sit lowest, because little or none of the pay is variable.
Solutions engineer pay by industry and location
Industry moves a solutions engineer offer more than title does: security and AI vendors pay above horizontal SaaS at the same level, and hardware pays below it. Location still matters despite remote hiring, with New York and the Bay Area carrying the clearest premium.
Where we do and don't publish a geographic band

An em-dash means we do not publish that cut. We benchmark by metro, not by state, so use the Bay Area band for California and Austin for Texas.

Frequently asked questions
What does a solutions engineer do?
A solutions engineer is the technical half of a software sales team: running discovery to understand the buyer's environment, demonstrating the product against it, standing up a proof of concept, and answering the security, integration and architecture questions that decide the technical approval. The account executive owns the quota and the commercial relationship; the solutions engineer owns the technical win.
Do solutions engineers make good money?
Yes. Median base is $155,000 and median on-target earnings $219,000 in our dataset, which is above the national median for sales engineers reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics and close to senior software engineering pay without the on-call load.
What engineers make $200,000 a year?
In pre-sales, the level does it rather than the title: principal sales engineers reach a median OTE of $293,333, and senior solutions engineers at security and AI vendors clear $200,000 on-target well before that. Median solutions engineer OTE across all levels is $219,000, so $200,000 is a senior-to-principal number, not an entry one.
Are solutions engineers in high demand?
Demand is steady because the role is tied to closing revenue rather than to a build roadmap, and it is the seat vendors fill first when enterprise deals stall on technical objections. In our own searches the constraint is supply: candidates who are genuinely technical and comfortable in front of a buyer are scarce, which is what holds the pay premium up.
How much does a solutions engineer make?
Our own data puts the US median base salary at $155,000 and median on-target earnings at $219,000.
How does that compare with the BLS figure for sales engineers?
The Bureau of Labor Statistics reports a national median annual wage of $124,900 for sales engineers. Our solutions engineer base median sits 24.1% above it, because our sample is software and infrastructure vendors rather than all industries.
Pre-sales job titles, and which ones mean the same thing
Sales engineer, solutions consultant and solutions engineer are usually the same job under different names; solutions architect and technical account manager are genuinely different roles.
| Role | What they do | Owns quota? | Stage | Median base (US national) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales Engineer | Technical validation during the sale | Supports | Pre-sales | $145,000 |
| Solutions Consultant | Same function; common in enterprise software and services | Supports | Pre-sales | $148,000 |
| Solutions Engineer | Same function; common in SaaS and infrastructure | Supports | Pre-sales | $155,000 |
| Solutions Architect | Designs the technical solution; deeper, less deal-facing | No | Pre/post | $170,000 |
| Technical Account Manager | Owns the technical relationship after the sale | Usually not | Post-sales | $135,000 |
The three synonym pages carry the same underlying occupation, so read them together: sales engineer salary, solutions engineer salary and solutions consultant salary. The two genuinely different roles are solutions architect and technical account manager.
Median base figures in this table are US national medians across all metros, so they will be lower than the headline figure on a metro-specific page such as New York.
