Sales salaries
Chief Revenue Officer Salary in 2026
The short answer
Published US figures for chief revenue officers span $181,126 (PayScale average base, cross-industry) to $416,766 (Built In average total cash, tech) — and neither includes equity, the largest component at this level.
Built In reports a $239,166 average base and $416,766 average total cash for US tech CROs (2026). PayScale reports a $181,126 average base across industries (April 2026). The $58,000 base gap reflects population: PayScale pools CROs at small non-tech companies with tech executives.
CRO is the least standardised title in this list. At some companies it is the first commercial hire; at others it sits above several VPs. Cash benchmarks anchor the conversation, but scope and equity decide the real package.
We present these figures with more caution than any other page on this site: two sources, different populations, no equity data, and a title whose meaning varies by company.
Reported salary figures, by source
Every figure links to the source that published it. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether variable pay is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure. We do not blend these into an average of averages.
| Source | Reported figure | What it measures |
|---|---|---|
| Built In | $239,166 base / $416,766 total | Average base and average total cash compensation, US tech employers; equity not included · as of 2026 |
| PayScale | $181,126 | Average base salary, self-reported profiles, cross-industry · as of 2 Apr 2026 |
Why CRO sources disagree — and why both understate the package
The base gap between Built In and PayScale is the smaller problem. The larger one is what both sources leave out.
- Equity dominates at this level. CRO equity grants at venture-backed companies regularly exceed cumulative cash compensation. No public salary source measures this, so every published figure understates the real package.
- Title scope varies enormously. A CRO at a 20-person startup and a CRO at a public company share a title and almost nothing else. Cross-industry sources pool them; tech sources skew to venture-backed companies.
- Self-reported executive data is thin. Executives are a small population and underrepresented in self-reported datasets, which makes every CRO figure more sample-sensitive than the IC roles on this site.
CRO versus VP of sales
The CRO mandate is wider — all revenue, not just sales — and the cash premium over a VP of sales is real but modest on the sourced figures: Built In's $416,766 CRO total against $350,465 for VPs. The bigger difference is equity and scope, neither of which appears in salary data. The VP of sales page carries the full sourced comparison.
The organisation a CRO owns
A CRO's budget spans every revenue role on this site: SDRs, account executives, sales engineers and the leadership layers above them. If you are modelling the full revenue organisation, the sales engineer cost page and the SE-to-AE ratio benchmarks cover the pre-sales side.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a chief revenue officer make in the US?
Built In reports a $239,166 average base and $416,766 average total cash for US tech CROs (2026); PayScale reports a $181,126 average base across industries (April 2026). Neither includes equity, which is often the largest component of a CRO package.
Why is CRO salary data so unreliable?
Three reasons: the title covers vastly different scopes, executives are underrepresented in self-reported datasets, and equity — the largest component at this level — is not measured by any public salary source.
Does a CRO earn more than a VP of sales?
On cash, modestly: Built In's figures show $416,766 average total cash for CROs against $350,465 for VPs of sales. The larger difference is equity and scope, which salary data does not capture.
