Technical account manager salary guide

TAM packages are the base-heavy end of the technical go-to-market market: more fixed cash, far less variable, and a lower headline OTE than pre-sales.

A TAM is a retention and adoption role, not a quota-carrying pre-sales role. That single distinction explains almost all of the pay difference: with less revenue risk attached to the seat, employers hold back the variable and pay a stronger base.

Based on our placement data

The exact TAM-to-SE gap, and why it isn't a downgrade

Median TAM OTE of $138k sits about 19% below the $170k sales engineer median — but the comparison flatters the SE. Because TAM packages run 85/15, the guaranteed cash is far closer than the headline suggests.

If a candidate is choosing between your TAM offer and an SE offer, compete on base and attainment realism — not on the OTE headline.
