Mid-Level Sales Engineer Salary in 2026
The short answer
A mid-level sales engineer earns a median base salary of $155,000 and a median OTE of $187,879, against a supported quota of $1,750,000 in annual recurring revenue.
Mid-level is the largest band in pre-sales and the one aggregators describe least well: most published “sales engineer” averages are a blend of this level with junior and senior offers, which is why they land below our mid-level median.
The band is defined by autonomy on mid-market deals — running discovery, demos and proofs of concept in an assigned patch, with escalation available rather than assumed.
Our own figure for the level is 24.1% above the $124,900 national median the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports for sales engineers across all industries and levels, because that government figure covers every level and every sector, including non-software.

How to read every figure on this page
| Base salary | Observed base salary, excluding commission. Guaranteed cash, before any commission or bonus. |
|---|---|
| Target total pay (OTE) | Observed target total pay (OTE), base plus variable at 100% of quota. It is a target, not an average payout — actual earnings depend on quota attainment. |
| Who is in the sample | Enterprise technology pre-sales professionals in offers we negotiated or verified |
| Geography | United States, all metros |
| Not in the sample | Support engineers, inside-sales engineers, post-sales architects and non-enterprise vendors. Official statistics such as the BLS figure quoted on this page cover all sales engineers in all industries, which is a wider population and a lower median. |
| Collection window | January 2026 to August 2026 |
| Sample | n = 86 of a national dataset of 1,749 |
| Median, not mean | Every figure is a median (50th percentile). We publish no means, because a handful of very large pre-sales packages distorts them. |
Reported salary figures, by source
Every third-party figure links to the source that published it. Our own row is last. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether commission is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure.

Why mid-level pay is the hardest level to read online
Almost no aggregator publishes a “mid-level” cut. The figures you find are level-blended, so use them for direction only.
- Level blending. A generic sales engineer average mixes first-job offers with enterprise senior packages. Its median sits below the mid-level band even though mid-level is the modal level.
- Base versus on-target earnings. Our mid-level base is $155,000 and the OTE is $187,879. Comparing a published base to someone's quoted OTE creates a gap that has nothing to do with seniority.
- Title inflation. Some vendors hand out the senior title in year three. When they do, the pay usually stays in the mid-level band, so read the plan and the quota rather than the title.
Sales engineer ladder: mid-level in context
Our own bands for each level, from a national dataset of n = 86 of a national dataset of 1,749 mid-level offers upward.
| Level | Median base | Median OTE | Quota (ARR supported) | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales Engineer (mid) | $155,000 | $187,879 | $1,750,000 | Owns discovery, demos and POCs on mid-market deals |
| Sr. Sales Engineer | $185,000 | $238,710 | $2,625,000 | Owns the technical close on enterprise deals unaided |
| Principal Sales Engineer | $220,000 | $293,333 | $3,500,000 | Strategic accounts, competitive escalations, team leverage |
Base and target total pay are both observed in the offers themselves, not derived from one another. Population: enterprise technology pre-sales professionals in offers we negotiated or verified. Counts for individual levels are drawn from the same sample and are not published separately.
What counts as mid-level in pre-sales
Three to six years of pre-sales experience is the usual range, but the test employers actually apply is whether you can be trusted alone in a technical evaluation. At mid-level you own discovery and the demo, scope and run a proof of concept, and answer security and integration questions without a second engineer in the room for standard deals.
What you are not yet expected to own is deal strategy on strategic accounts, competitive escalations or team-wide enablement assets. Those are the senior tests, and they are what the next band pays for.
The plan behind the mid-level number
Mid-level plans in our dataset sit around a 80/20–85/15 base-to-variable split, with the variable component earned against a supported quota rather than an individually owned one — the SE is credited on the deals they support.
Median actual attainment across the plans we see is 61.4%, which means a mid-level offer quoted at $187,879 paid closer to base than to target for most of the market last year. Ask for the attainment history of the level before treating OTE as income.
What the step to senior is worth
Moving from mid-level to senior is worth $30,000 on median base in our data: $155,000 against $185,000, with the supported quota rising to $2,625,000.
It is the largest single step on the pre-sales ladder in percentage terms, and it is granted for scope — enterprise segment, unaided technical close, leverage for the team — rather than for tenure.
Read this alongside the national sales engineer compensation data, which is the benchmark every cut on this page is measured against.
The rest of the ladder: principal sales engineer packages, sales engineering manager pay and junior sales engineer pay. Each is cut from the same dataset, so the gaps between them are comparable.
If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer pay page is the closer comparison.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a mid-level sales engineer make?
Median base $155,000 and median OTE $187,879 in our 2026 dataset, against a supported quota of $1,750,000.
How many years of experience is a mid-level sales engineer?
Three to six years of pre-sales experience is typical, but the band is defined by autonomy rather than tenure: a mid-level SE runs a standard technical evaluation without a second engineer in the room.
What is the difference between mid-level and senior sales engineer pay?
$30,000 on median base — $155,000 at mid-level against $185,000 at senior — with the supported quota rising to $2,625,000.
Is a mid-level sales engineer OTE realistic?
Only partly. Median actual attainment in the plans we see is 61.4%, so a quoted OTE of $187,879 typically paid less than target. Judge an offer on base first, then on the attainment history of the level.
Pre-sales job titles, and which ones mean the same thing
Sales engineer, solutions consultant and solutions engineer are usually the same job under different names; solutions architect and technical account manager are genuinely different roles.
| Role | What they do | Owns quota? | Stage | Median base (US national) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sales Engineer | Technical validation during the sale | Supports | Pre-sales | $145,000 |
| Solutions Consultant | Same function; common in enterprise software and services | Supports | Pre-sales | $148,000 |
| Solutions Engineer | Same function; common in SaaS and infrastructure | Supports | Pre-sales | $155,000 |
| Solutions Architect | Designs the technical solution; deeper, less deal-facing | No | Pre/post | $170,000 |
| Technical Account Manager | Owns the technical relationship after the sale | Usually not | Post-sales | $135,000 |
The three synonym pages carry the same underlying occupation, so read them together: sales engineer salary, solutions engineer salary and solutions consultant salary. The two genuinely different roles are solutions architect and technical account manager.
Median base figures in this table are US national medians across all metros, so they will be lower than the headline figure on a metro-specific page such as New York.
