What does a sales engineer do?
A sales engineer owns the technical win. They don't own the number — they own whether the buyer's engineers believe the product will work. Median OTE in the US sits near $182k.

The core workflow
Almost every pre-sales motion in the US market follows the same four stages. How quickly you can run stage three unaccompanied is, more or less, your level.
| Stage | Typical duration | What the SE actually does |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Discovery | 1–2 calls | Qualifies the technical problem and the buying committee alongside the AE. |
| 2. Custom demo | 3–7 days | Rebuilds the demo environment around the prospect's own use case and data shape. |
| 3. Proof of concept | 2–6 weeks | Runs a scoped, success-criteria-driven pilot in the customer's environment. |
| 4. Security & compliance | 1–3 weeks | Answers the security questionnaire, architecture review and procurement objections. |
How it differs by sector
The workflow is constant; the proof of concept is not.
| Sector | The proof of concept | Core stack | Median OTE |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cybersecurity | Simulate a live attack against the buyer's own environment. | CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, Okta, Zero-Trust / ZTNA, IAM | $210k |
| AI / ML | Build a governed AI prototype on the customer's own data. | LLM orchestration, Vector DBs (Pinecone), Data-labeling, RAG pipelines | $205k |
| Cloud / DevOps | Draw and cost the target cloud architecture with the platform team. | AWS, Azure, GCP, Kubernetes, HashiCorp | $190k |
| Enterprise SaaS | Map integrations and data flow across a CIO's existing stack. | Salesforce, Workday, SAP, MuleSoft | $178k |
| Hardware / Networking | Bench-test throughput, power and topology in a real data center. | Servers & storage, Networking, Data-center infra | $165k |
The skills that matter
What the job actually asks of you, week to week.
| Skill | What good looks like | Weight |
|---|---|---|
| Discovery | Finding the technical problem behind the stated requirement. | Core |
| Demo craft | Three things that matter to this persona, not twelve that matter to you. | Core |
| PoC ownership | Writing success criteria, holding the timeline, closing them out. | Decisive |
| Architecture fluency | Enough depth to be believed by the buyer's engineers. | Core |
| Written communication | Security questionnaires, scoping docs, follow-up summaries. | Underrated |
| Commercial awareness | Knowing how the deal is won and what quietly stalls it. | Underrated |
Based on our placement data
A day in the life, from the people we place
“Two hours on a PoC environment before anyone's awake, three calls where I'm the only person who can answer the architecture question, and an hour at the end filling in a security questionnaire nobody else will touch.” — Senior SE, cloud infrastructure (placeholder quote).
“The demo is the easy part. The PoC is where deals are actually won or lost, and it's four weeks of unglamorous work.” — Principal SE, cybersecurity (placeholder quote).
“I came from support. The technical bar was lower than I feared; the commercial bar was much higher.” — SE, SaaS (placeholder quote).
In our placement debriefs, the strongest predictor of a successful SE hire was not product knowledge but PoC ownership history — candidates who had personally scoped and defended success criteria closed their ramp faster.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. All numbers currently shown are illustrative placeholders. Read the full methodology.
