Compensation · SE vs AE
Who earns more: a sales engineer or an account executive?
The median answer is 'about the same'. The interesting answer is in the spread.
Updated 24 September 2026 · Data collected 1 January – 8 August 2026
At the median, neither role clearly out-earns the other: our median sales engineer OTE is $205,000 against about $200,000 for AEs (The Bridge Group). Top AEs out-earn everyone — RepVue reports AE top-performer earnings around $505,000 (RepVue) — but sales engineers have the higher floor and far more predictable pay.
Floor, middle and ceiling
| Sales engineer | Account executive | |
|---|---|---|
| Guaranteed base (median) | $145,000 | $100,000 (RepVue) |
| Target pay (median OTE) | $205,000 | $200,000 (The Bridge Group) |
| Top of the distribution | Principal SE median $293,333 | ~$505,000 top performer (RepVue) |
| Hitting target | 61.4% of target variable paid | 48% of reps at quota (The Bridge Group) |
The two "top" figures are not the same statistic — ours is a level median, RepVue's is a top-performer figure — so they show the shape of each role, not a like-for-like gap.
What a bad year looks like
Take two people on $200,000 OTE who each reach 50% of target. The AE on 50/50 keeps the $100,000 base and half the $100,000 variable: $150,000, a 25% drop. The SE on 70/30 keeps $140,000 base and half of $60,000: $170,000, a 15% drop. Because SE variable is usually pooled across several AEs, one lost deal also moves it less.
The career-length argument
A top AE's best years can beat any SE's. But AE pay swings with territory, quota changes and employer, while SE pay compounds more steadily with seniority and technical depth. Over a full career, the SE path trades peak years for fewer troughs.
Frequently asked questions
Who earns more, a sales engineer or an account executive?
At the median they are close on target pay. The AE has the higher ceiling; the SE has the higher floor and steadier earnings.
What does a bad year look like for each role?
An AE on a 50/50 split who reaches half of quota loses roughly a quarter of target pay. An SE on 70/30 at the same attainment loses about 15%.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
