Sales Engineer Salary in New York, NY

By Charlie Simpson, Head of compensation researchLast updated: Sample size: n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749Methodology

The short answer

Sales engineers in the New York City metro earn an observed median base salary of $185,000 and an observed median target total pay (OTE) of $265,000 — a 70/30 base-to-variable split — from n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749 enterprise technology pre-sales offers collected January 2026 to August 2026.

Both figures are observed in the offers themselves, not derived from one another: the base is guaranteed cash excluding commission, and the OTE is the stated target for base plus variable pay at 100% of quota. Neither is an average payout, and neither covers New York State outside the city's commuting area.

That base is a premium of 48.1% over the $124,900 national median annual wage for sales engineers reported by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025) — a deliberately wider population, covering all sales engineers in all industries and all locations.

Indeed puts the local base at $144,446 plus around $21,000 in commission, drawn from 179 salaries and updated 16 July 2026 — the largest openly published New York sample we can attribute. Our own figure is higher because it is drawn from negotiated enterprise pre-sales offers rather than all advertised sales-engineer roles.

New York pay is concentrated in financial services, security and enterprise SaaS vendors selling into Manhattan buyers, which is why the metro carries a premium rather than simply a higher cost of living.

Reported salary figures, by source

Every third-party figure links to the source that published it. Our own row is last. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether commission is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure.

Why the published New York numbers disagree

The spread from $132,470 to $205,000 for the same metro is not disagreement about the market. Five things differ between the sources: the quantity reported, the population sampled, the geography, the statistic used, and the date. Hold those constant and the sources are much closer than the headlines suggest.

  • Base versus total compensation. Built In reports $132,470 base against $179,339 total. Glassdoor's $167,648 is a total-compensation figure. Comparing Built In's base with Glassdoor's total is comparing two different quantities. Our own page keeps them in separate columns for exactly this reason: observed base $185,000, observed target total pay $265,000.
  • Which employers are sampled. RepVue's $146,000 base / $205,000 OTE is the most pre-sales specific of the public sources, because its respondents are sales professionals rather than all engineers. Aggregators that sample all sales-engineer adverts pick up support and inside-sales roles alongside enterprise pre-sales. Ours is narrower still: enterprise technology pre-sales offers only.
  • New York City versus New York State. Some sources report a state-level or "New York, NY" figure that mixes in employers well outside the city's commuting area, where pay is materially lower. Every figure on this page is the New York City metro — the five boroughs plus the commuting area — and never New York State.
  • Median versus mean. A mean is pulled upwards by a handful of very large pre-sales packages, and several public sources report averages. Every figure we publish is a median, so a few outsized New York packages cannot move it.
  • Commission treatment and date. Indeed reports base and commission separately (~$21,000 additional) as of 16 July 2026. Sources that fold commission into one number will always look higher, and sources that omit it will always look lower. Our OTE includes variable pay at 100% of quota, and our whole New York sample was collected January 2026 to August 2026 — a window we state rather than a rolling "last 12 months".

New York sales engineer salary by seniority

Observed New York bands: both columns are observed in the offers themselves, base excluding commission and OTE as the stated target at 100% of quota. Every level is a cut of the same n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749 New York offers collected January 2026 to August 2026, so per-level counts are not published separately. Levels we have not yet published show an em-dash rather than an estimate.

Sr. Sales Engineer$220,806$284,911
Principal/Staff SE$262,581$350,108
SE Manager$238,710$308,013

Base and target total pay are both observed in the offers themselves, not derived from one another. Population: enterprise technology pre-sales professionals in offers we negotiated or verified. Geography: New York City metro (the five boroughs and its commuting area) — not New York State. Collected January 2026 to August 2026. n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749. Counts for individual levels are drawn from the same sample and are not published separately.

Cost of living: what a New York offer is really worth

Start with the premium. Our New York median base of $185,000 sits 48.1% above the BLS national median of $124,900$60,100 in cash. That is a substantial premium, and larger than a cost-of-living adjustment alone would explain.

Tax takes part of it back. A New York City resident pays New York State income tax of roughly 6.85% at these income levels plus city resident tax of around 3.876%, a combined 10.7%. Texas and Florida levy no state income tax at all, so against Austin or Miami the gap is the full state-plus-city load: roughly $19,800 a year on our New York median base. (Note the comparison being made — it is against a no-income-tax state, not against another taxed state, where the gap is much smaller.)

Housing takes more. Median rent for a one-bedroom in Manhattan runs materially above every comparison metro except San Francisco, and that difference is not indexed to the pay premium.

The comparison that matters is not against the national wage figure, though — it is against the offers a New York candidate can actually accept instead. Our remote (US) median base is $168,000, so New York pays only 10.1% more, and that is less than the 10.7% tax load a Manhattan resident carries before rent is counted.

So the honest conclusion holds: against the national median the New York number is genuinely large, but against a remote offer it is neutral to negative once tax and housing are netted off. Take a New York offer for the density of enterprise buyers, the deal sizes and the career optionality — not because the headline number is bigger.

Where the New York figures come from, and what we do not claim

Every figure on this page comes from offers, not from adverts and not from a survey panel. An offer enters the New York sample when we have the employer, the level, the base salary and the stated target total pay in writing, and when the role is enterprise technology pre-sales based in the New York City metro. Advertised ranges never enter this dataset; we keep those in a separate advertised-compensation database precisely so the two can never be blended.

Base and target total pay are recorded as two independent fields. We do not infer OTE from base by applying a split, and we do not infer base from a total. The 70/30 split shown above is therefore an output of the data rather than an assumption fed into it — which is why it can be quoted as evidence about how New York packages are actually structured.

The New York sample is n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749, collected January 2026 to August 2026. That single sample supports every row of the seniority table, so the level medians are cuts of one sample, not four independent ones. We do not publish per-level counts for New York, because several of the levels fall below the sample of 30 we require before publishing a median in its own right.

Three things we could publish and deliberately do not. Percentiles: the 25th and 75th percentile for New York are not yet released, so the page shows that state rather than a range implied from the median. Actual commission paid against target: we hold target total pay, not year-end payouts, so any statement about what New York sales engineers actually earned against quota would be an estimate dressed as an observation. Anonymised individual offers: not published, because the New York sample is small enough that a level plus an industry plus a package can identify a person.

Where a figure anywhere on this site is estimated rather than observed, it is labelled as estimated at the point of use and carries no sample size. Nothing on this New York page is estimated: base and target total pay are both observed.

The other markets we track: the SF Bay market, senior sales engineer pay in New York and Austin bands. Each is cut from the same dataset, so the gaps between them are comparable.

If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer salary page is the closer comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sales engineer make in New York?

In enterprise technology pre-sales offers we negotiated in the New York City metro (not New York State), the observed median base salary is $185,000 and the observed median target total pay (OTE) is $265,000, from n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749 collected January 2026 to August 2026. Both figures are observed in the offers themselves: the base excludes commission, and the OTE is the stated target for base plus variable at 100% of quota. That base is a premium of 48.1% over the $124,900 national median for all sales engineers in all industries reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (May 2025), which is a wider population than ours.

What is the NYC sales engineer base salary versus OTE?

They are two different, separately observed quantities. Observed median base salary — guaranteed cash, no commission — is $185,000. Observed median target total pay (OTE), which adds variable pay at 100% of quota, is $265,000. That is a 70/30 base-to-variable split. OTE is a target rather than an average payout, so a New York sales engineer below quota earns less than $265,000 and one above quota can earn more. Both figures come from the same n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749, collected January 2026 to August 2026.

What do senior enterprise sales engineers earn in New York?

In our New York sample, senior sales engineers show an observed median base of $220,806 and an observed median target total pay of $284,911, against $185,000 and $265,000 at the sales engineer level. Every level in that table is drawn from the same n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749; we do not publish separate counts per level, so treat the level rows as cuts of one New York sample rather than four independent samples.

Why do salary websites report different New York numbers?

Because they measure different things. Four differences explain almost all of the spread: population (all advertised sales-engineer roles versus enterprise technology pre-sales offers only), geography (New York City metro versus New York State versus national), the quantity reported (base salary alone, base plus commission, or total compensation), and the date and size of the sample. Comparing one site's base with another's total is comparing two different quantities, not two views of the same market. Our own figures are the observed medians of n = 52 of a national dataset of 1,749 negotiated New York offers collected January 2026 to August 2026.

Is a sales engineer salary in NYC higher than in San Francisco?

No. Observed median base in the New York City metro is $185,000 against $195,000 in the San Francisco Bay Area metro, though New York's higher local tax narrows the take-home gap. Both are base salaries from the same collection window, so they are directly comparable.

Is a New York sales engineer salary enough to live on?

On the observed median base of $185,000, combined New York State and City income tax runs at about 10.7% on top of federal tax, so the local cost premium absorbs a large part of the metro uplift. The methodology page shows that arithmetic in full.

Pre-sales job titles, and which ones mean the same thing

Sales engineer, solutions consultant and solutions engineer are usually the same job under different names; solutions architect and technical account manager are genuinely different roles.

The three synonym pages carry the same underlying occupation, so read them together: sales engineer salary, solutions engineer salary and solutions consultant salary. The two genuinely different roles are solutions architect and technical account manager.

Median base figures in this table are US national medians across all metros, so they will be lower than the headline figure on a metro-specific page such as New York.
