The ladder, level by level
What each level pays and what it costs to get there.
| Level | Years | Median base | Median OTE | Jump to next level | What triggers the step up |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Associate / Junior SE | 0–2 | $115k | $128k | +$60k OTE | Owning technical deals solo without oversight |
| Sales Engineer (mid) | 3–5 | $155k | $188k | +$51k OTE | Consistent technical wins on larger, complex deals |
| Senior SE | 6–9 | $185k | $239k | +$55k OTE | Strategic accounts, mentoring, leading multi-week PoCs |
| Principal / Staff SE | 10+ | $220k | $293k | Leadership track | Org-wide technical influence (IC leadership track) |
| SE Manager | 8+ | $200k | $258k | Leadership track | People leadership + team quota ownership |
IC track vs leadership track
Two tracks that diverge around the senior level.
| Track | The ladder | What the week looks like |
|---|---|---|
| IC track | Associate SE → SE → Senior SE → Principal / Staff SE | Strategic accounts, hardest architectures, PoC design, enablement content |
| Leadership track | Senior SE → SE Manager → Director / VP of Sales Engineering | Hiring, ramping, forecast reviews, headcount and team quota |
How to choose the fork
- Go IC if the part you'd miss is the architecture, the hardest PoCs and being the person the room defers to technically.
- Go leadership if you already enjoy ramping new SEs, fixing the demo library and arguing about headcount more than you enjoy the deal itself.
- Test it first: run enablement or mentor two new hires for a quarter before you take the title.
Sideways moves that pay
Moving sector — into cybersecurity or AI/ML — often pays more than a level. So does moving from a mid-market motion into enterprise PoC work at the same title. Check both against the calculator before you accept a promotion in place.
Based on our placement data
The principal-versus-manager fork
Principal ICs and first-line SE managers sit close on cash — $293k against $258k median OTE. The difference is what you spend your week on: strategic accounts and architecture versus hiring, enablement and forecast reviews. Choose on the work, not the delta.
In our placement data the move that most often backfires is taking a manager title for the pay step and losing the technical reps that made you valuable. Managers who come back to IC roles usually re-enter at the same level they left, not above it.

If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer salary page is the closer comparison.

Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
