How much to pay a sales engineer
Everything below is framed around the budget conversation: what number to take to finance, how to shape the package, and what actually causes offers to be turned down.
Updated July 2026
1. Start from the accepted median, not the advertised one
National accepted median OTE is $182k against an advertised median of $175k. Budgeting to the advertised figure builds a 4% shortfall into the plan before you've spoken to anyone.
2. Set the level before the number
The single biggest driver of cost is the level you actually need. A strong senior SE frequently outperforms a weak principal at $40k less.
- Associate / Junior SE$118k / $88k base
- Sales Engineer (mid)$170k / $122k base
- Senior SE$205k / $148k base
- Principal / Staff SE$245k / $172k base
- SE Manager$270k / $185k base
3. Structure the offer to survive the counter
| Lever | What it costs you | What it buys |
|---|---|---|
| Base +$10k | Fixed, compounding | The most reliable way to beat a counter-offer |
| Ramp guarantee (3–6 months) | One-off, capped | De-risks the move; very high acceptance impact |
| Accelerators over 100% | Only paid on overperformance | Attracts genuine top quartile candidates |
| Equity | Dilution | Matters in software, largely ignored in hardware |

What we see when offers fail
Accepted OTE runs +4% ahead of advertised OTE, and 38% of in-demand sales engineers receive a counter-offer from their current employer. The counter is usually base-led — which is why an offer that wins on OTE but loses on base tends to lose.
| Advertised band | Median time to fill |
|---|---|
| Under $140k OTE | 61 days |
| $140k–$182k OTE | 44 days |
| $182k–$240k OTE | 33 days |
| $240k+ OTE | 26 days |
The curve is steep between $150k and $185k: adding roughly $20k to the band cut median time-to-fill by about a quarter. If speed matters more than unit cost, that's the cheapest lever you have.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. All numbers currently shown are illustrative placeholders. Read the full methodology.
