Software vs hardware sales engineer pay
Same title, two different labour markets. Software pre-sales pays more on OTE; hardware pre-sales pays more predictably.
Updated July 2026
The distinction matters most when you're writing the job spec. A hardware buyer wants topology, power and thermal credibility; a software buyer wants APIs and cloud architecture. Candidates rarely cross over cleanly, and pricing the role from the wrong market is the fastest way to an empty shortlist.
| Software SE | Hardware SE | |
|---|---|---|
| What they sell | Subscriptions, platforms and APIs | Servers, chips, switching and optics |
| Who they sell to | CTOs, platform leads and engineers | Data-center and infrastructure directors |
| Core skills | Coding, cloud architecture, APIs | Network topology, power, physics |
| Package shape | Higher OTE, variable bonus | Stable base, lower but more reliable bonus |
| Median OTE | $182k | $155k |
| Equity prevalence | 68% | 24% |

The real delta once you account for equity
Median OTE runs $182k in software against $155k in hardware — a $27k (17%) gap. Equity widens it further: 68% of software pre-sales offers include meaningful equity versus 24% in hardware.
Hardware compensates with reliability. Attainment against plan is higher and less volatile, so the realised gap over three years is narrower than the headline suggests — a point worth making explicitly when you're recruiting a software SE into a hardware seat.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. All numbers currently shown are illustrative placeholders. Read the full methodology.
