Sales Manager Salary in 2026

By Charlie Simpson, Head of compensation researchLast updated: Figures on this page come from the named external sources below; this role is not in our own offer dataset.Methodology

The short answer

US sales manager pay depends heavily on which source you read: RepVue reports a $150,000 median base and $280,000 median OTE for tech sales managers, while Built In reports a $105,259 average base and $167,231 average total cash.

This is the widest disagreement between two tech-oriented sources on any role we track, and we present both rather than blending them into a figure neither source reports.

The official all-industry reference point is the BLS Occupational Outlook Handbook: a $148,270 median annual wage for sales managers across all industries (May 2025). That is an occupational wage including incentive pay — not base salary and not OTE — covering every industry from retail to SaaS.

The likely drivers of the gap: RepVue's population skews to venture-backed tech companies where frontline managers carry team quotas, while Built In's employer-side data includes a wider range of company sizes and manager scopes.

Reported salary figures, by source

Every figure links to the source that published it. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether variable pay is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure. We do not blend these into an average of averages.

Why sales manager sources disagree by over $100,000 on total pay

A $280,000 median OTE against a $167,231 average total cash is not a rounding difference. Three structural reasons explain most of it.

  • Team quota versus personal quota. Tech sales managers often carry a team number with accelerators; manager pay scales with team attainment. Sources that pool player-coach roles with pure management roles blend two different pay structures.
  • Median versus average. RepVue reports medians, Built In reports averages. Manager pay has a long left tail of small-company roles that pulls averages down more than medians.
  • The BLS figure is a different measure entirely. The $148,270 BLS median is an occupational wage across all industries, including retail and manufacturing sales management. It is the right benchmark for the economy-wide role and the wrong one for a SaaS frontline manager.

The frontline manager's economics

A first-line sales manager typically manages six to ten AEs. At RepVue's medians, the manager's $280,000 OTE costs less than the incremental OTE of two enterprise AEs — which is why the span-of-control decision matters more than the manager's salary in isolation. Our SE-to-AE ratio page covers the same arithmetic for pre-sales headcount.

Sales manager versus sales engineering manager

The pre-sales counterpart is the sales engineering manager, and our verified offer data covers that role directly: see the sales engineering manager salary page for medians from our own dataset, and the SE manager vs sales manager comparison for how the two leadership tracks diverge.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a sales manager make in the US?

It depends on the source: RepVue reports a $150,000 median base and $280,000 median OTE for tech sales managers (October 2026); Built In reports a $105,259 average base and $167,231 average total cash; the BLS reports a $148,270 median wage across all industries (May 2025). The sources measure different populations and should not be blended.

Why is the BLS sales manager figure different from tech salary sites?

The BLS median covers sales managers in every industry — retail, manufacturing, wholesale, tech — and measures occupational wage including incentives, not base or OTE. Tech salary sites cover a narrower, higher-paying population.

Do sales managers earn more than senior account executives?

On RepVue's tech figures, yes at target: a $280,000 median OTE for managers against $200,000 for the blended AE population. On cross-industry data the picture is murkier, because the senior AE title is inconsistently defined outside tech.
