Strategic Account Executive Salary in 2026

By Charlie Simpson, Head of compensation researchLast updated: Figures on this page come from the named external sources below; this role is not in our own offer dataset.Methodology

The short answer

Strategic account executives in tech earn a median base of $150,000 and median OTE of $300,000, according to RepVue's trailing-year salary reports (October 2026).

An important caveat: cross-industry sources report far less. Glassdoor shows a $218,000 median total pay and Salary.com an $80,483 average salary. The gap exists because 'strategic account executive' is a tech-sales title — outside tech the same words describe mid-level account management roles.

The RepVue figure is the only role-specific tech-sales benchmark published for this title, so it carries this page — but it is one source, not a consensus, and we present it that way.

OTE is pay at 100% of quota. Strategic roles carry the largest deals and the longest cycles, so attainment variance is wider than in any other AE segment.

Reported salary figures, by source

Every figure links to the source that published it. Sources differ in population, geography, date and whether variable pay is included, so the “What it measures” column matters as much as the figure. We do not blend these into an average of averages.

Why strategic AE sources disagree by nearly 2x

RepVue's $150,000 median base is nearly double Salary.com's $80,483 average. This is the widest source disagreement on any role page on this site, and it has a structural cause.

  • The title is tech-specific, the data is not. In SaaS, 'strategic' means a small number of named accounts with seven-figure deal sizes. Cross-industry sources pool that with account managers who inherited the word 'strategic' from a job title generator.
  • Base versus total, again. Glassdoor's $218,000 is total pay including bonus; Salary.com's figure has no stated split. Only RepVue separates base from OTE for this title.
  • Small populations. Strategic AE is a small role — a company might have hundreds of AEs and a dozen strategic AEs. Small samples move medians, which is another reason to treat any single source with care.

Strategic versus enterprise account executive

The two titles overlap heavily. Where a company uses both, strategic sits above enterprise: fewer accounts, larger deals, more executive sponsorship. RepVue's medians put strategic OTE $20,000 above enterprise ($300,000 versus $280,000) — a smaller gap than the titles suggest, because the populations overlap.

The team around a strategic AE

Strategic deals are never sold alone. They run with dedicated pre-sales support — typically a senior or principal sales engineer — which is why our SE-to-AE ratio benchmarks show enterprise and strategic motions running at 1:1 to 1:2, the densest pre-sales coverage in the industry.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a strategic account executive make?

RepVue reports a median base of $150,000 and median OTE of $300,000 for tech strategic AEs (October 2026). Cross-industry sources report less — Glassdoor shows $218,000 median total pay — because the title covers different jobs outside tech.

Is strategic AE the highest-paid sales role?

Among individual contributors, yes, at target: RepVue's $300,000 median OTE is the highest IC figure it publishes. Sales leadership pays more in cash at director level and above — see the director of sales and VP of sales pages.

What is the difference between strategic and enterprise AE?

Where both titles exist, strategic sits above enterprise: fewer named accounts, larger deals, longer cycles. The pay medians are close — $300,000 versus $280,000 OTE on RepVue — because the populations overlap heavily.
