Cybersecurity Sales Engineer Salary in 2026

By Charlie Simpson, Head of compensation researchLast updated: Sample size: n = 327 of a national dataset of 1,749Methodology

The short answer

A cybersecurity sales engineer earns a median base salary of $195,000 and a median OTE of $255,000, placing security pre-sales at the upper end of the sales engineering market.

Public figures for the same job run from $96,194 (ZipRecruiter) to $203,409 in total compensation (Glassdoor, for “security sales engineer”), with the gap between them explained by what each figure counts rather than by the market.

The reason security pays above horizontal SaaS is buyer scrutiny: a security SE has to survive a technical evaluation run by a CISO's team, often including a hands-on bake-off, and the vendors selling into that process compete for a small pool of people who can pass it.

Every third-party figure below is linked to its source. Our own headline security medians are drawn from 327 verified pre-sales offers collected between 1 January and 8 August 2026.

Why the published security numbers disagree by 2x

The $96,194 to $203,409 spread is mostly an artefact of how aggregator pages are generated, not a real difference in pay.

  • Spelling splits the same role across separate pages. ZipRecruiter reports $96,194 for “cybersecurity sales engineer” and $122,890 for “cyber security sales engineer” — the same job, two auto-generated pages, two different samples. Neither number is wrong; neither is a market median either.
  • Base versus total compensation. Glassdoor's $203,409 is total compensation including bonus and equity, while the ZipRecruiter figures are base only. The gap between them is roughly what a 70/30 split plus equity would predict.
  • Skill-based data is not role-based data. PayScale reports a premium for sales engineers with cyber security skills. That is pay by skill, not pay by job title, and it cannot be read as a median for the role.

Cybersecurity sales engineer salary by seniority

Our own security bands by level. The n = 327 sample size applies to the headline security base and OTE medians only; the level, vendor and certification cuts below are drawn from the same offers but we do not publish a sample size for each cut.

“Cybersecurity”, “cyber security” and “security sales engineer” are one role

State this plainly, because the public data does not: cybersecurity sales engineer, cyber security sales engineer and security sales engineer are the same role with three spellings. Nobody is paid differently for the space in “cyber security”.

The pay gap you see between those three terms in aggregator data is an artefact of separately auto-generated pages, each drawing on a different sample of job adverts and self-reports. It is a measurement artefact, not a pay difference. When you compare offers, compare plans and segments — not the spelling on the advert.

Employers make the same mistake in reverse: posting the same role under two spellings splits your applicant pool and your benchmarking. Pick one and use it consistently.

Security SE pay by vendor type

Not all security vendors pay alike. Network and cloud security carry the highest bands, identity sits in the middle, and GRC or compliance tooling pays below both because the evaluation is less hands-on and the deal sizes are smaller.

Certifications that move security SE pay

Certifications matter more in security pre-sales than in any other vertical, because they act as a proxy for surviving a CISO-led evaluation. CISSP is the most widely requested; cloud security certifications (CCSP, AWS Security Specialty) move offers at cloud-native vendors; offensive certifications (OSCP) matter at vendors whose evaluation includes hands-on exploitation; and an active clearance is a hard requirement, and a hard premium, for federal roles.

We report the uplift we have observed in negotiated offers rather than a modelled figure — where a cut is unpublished, it shows an em-dash.

Security versus SaaS sales engineer pay

Security pre-sales generally pays above horizontal SaaS for the same seniority, with a larger variable component in vendors selling into enterprise SOC teams. Our SaaS page carries the full base, OTE and company-stage breakdown for the comparison.

Read this alongside the national US sales engineer pay data, which is the benchmark every cut on this page is measured against.

The other sectors: SaaS pre-sales pay, cloud and infrastructure bands and AI and ML sales engineer pay. Each is cut from the same dataset, so the gaps between them are comparable.

If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer salary page is the closer comparison.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a cybersecurity sales engineer make?

Median base $195,000, median OTE $255,000.

What does a cybersecurity sales engineer do?

They are the technical half of a security sales team: scoping the evaluation, running the demo, standing up a proof of concept in the buyer's own environment, and answering the architecture, integration and compliance questions a CISO's team raises. The account executive carries the commercial relationship; the sales engineer earns the technical approval the deal depends on.

Do cybersecurity sales engineers earn more than other sales engineers?

Yes. Median OTE in security is $255,000 against $205,000 for sales engineers overall, because security vendors compete for a small pool of people who can survive a hands-on technical evaluation run by a security team.

Is cybersecurity sales engineering a good career?

It pays at the top of the pre-sales market without carrying a closing quota, and demand tracks security budgets rather than a single vendor's growth. Certifications compound: we observe roughly a 12.7% uplift on base where CISSP is required and about 15% where an active clearance is. The usual routes on are sales engineering management, product management or security architecture.

Pre-sales job titles, and which ones mean the same thing

Sales engineer, solutions consultant and solutions engineer are usually the same job under different names; solutions architect and technical account manager are genuinely different roles.

Pre-sales job titles compared: function, quota ownership, deal stage and US national median base

Solutions ArchitectDesigns the technical solution; deeper, less deal-facingNoPre/post$170,000
Technical Account ManagerOwns the technical relationship after the saleUsually notPost-sales$135,000

The three synonym pages carry the same underlying occupation, so read them together: sales engineer salary, solutions engineer salary and solutions consultant salary. The two genuinely different roles are solutions architect and technical account manager.

Median base figures in this table are US national medians across all metros, so they will be lower than the headline figure on a metro-specific page such as New York.
