For employers
How much should you pay a solutions engineer?
Solutions engineer and sales engineer are the same job under two names, so budget them from the same data. Below is the number to take to finance, and how to shape it so the offer survives a counter.
Updated August 2026
1. Decide the level before the number
Level drives cost far more than location or sector. Mid-level median base is $155,000 against $185,000 at senior — a step of $30,000. If the role covers mid-market deals with escalation available, you are buying mid-level and should not be paying a senior band for a senior title.
2. Set base first, then the split
Pre-sales offers are won and lost on base, because that is what a counter-offer from the candidate's current employer moves. A 80/20–85/15 base-to-variable split is the norm in the plans we see; anything more aggressive needs an attainment history you can evidence.
3. Budget the ramp, not just the year
A three-to-six month ramp guarantee is capped, one-off, and has an outsized effect on acceptance because it de-risks the move. It is almost always cheaper than the extra base you would otherwise need to add permanently.
What to budget, by level
| Level | Median base | Median OTE | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solutions engineer (mid) | $155,000 | $187,879 | Owns discovery, demos and POCs on mid-market deals |
| Senior solutions engineer | $185,000 | $238,710 | Closes the technical side of enterprise deals unaided |
| Principal solutions engineer | $220,000 | $293,333 | Strategic accounts, competitive escalations, team leverage |
| SE manager | $200,000 | $258,065 | Hires and runs the team against a team quota |
Where the band moves
Two adjustments are worth making and the rest are noise. Metro: New York sits at $185,000 median base and the Bay Area at $195,000. Sector: cybersecurity pays $195,000 median base, the highest cut we publish, because evaluations are compliance-heavy and the talent pool is small.
Everything above is a median. If you need the band for your exact role, level, location and stack, ask us for a benchmark and we will return it with the sample behind it.
Based on our placement data
Start from the accepted median
Our national median base for solutions engineers specifically is $155,000. We do not yet publish a sourced OTE for that title on its own, so budget total earnings from the wider sales engineer dataset: median OTE of $205,000 on a median base of $145,000. The variable half is earned against a supported quota — median $2,625,000 of annual recurring revenue — and median actual attainment last year was 61.4%.
That attainment figure is the one candidates now ask about. Budget a package whose variable component only pays at unrealistic attainment and you are effectively advertising a lower number than the one on the page.
Computed from our own placement and offer records.
Read this alongside the national US sales engineer pay data, which is the benchmark every cut on this page is measured against.
If the title on your job ad is "solutions engineer" rather than "sales engineer", the solutions engineer salary page is the closer comparison.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
