Sales engineer vs enterprise account executive pay
Enterprise is where SEs are staffed most tightly — and where AE pay pulls away.
Updated 24 September 2026 · Data collected 1 January – 8 August 2026
Enterprise AE OTE runs well above the all-AE median of about $200,000 (The Bridge Group), because enterprise quotas are larger. The fair SE comparison is senior or principal level, where our medians are $238,710 and $293,333 OTE.

We have not found a verifiable, dated enterprise-AE median to publish here, so we show the all-AE median and say so. Bridge Group notes enterprise OTEs sit above that median.
Why enterprise is different
Enterprise deals are larger and more technical, so SE coverage tightens toward one SE per one or two AEs (The GTM Index). The SE is in most meetings and often owns the proof of concept, which is why enterprise SEs are senior and paid accordingly — but the AE still carries the quota and the accelerators.
Frequently asked questions
Do enterprise AEs earn more than sales engineers?
Usually, at target. Enterprise AE plans carry larger quotas and OTEs; the gap narrows when you compare them with senior or principal SEs, who staff most enterprise deals.

Methodology
Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
