Sales engineer vs AE comp by company stage

Coverage and pay mix both move as a company grows.

Updated 24 September 2026 · Data collected 1 January – 8 August 2026

SE coverage widens with stage — from about one SE per AE at seed to one per five at public companies (PreSales Pulse). We do not publish stage-level pay medians: our offer sample is not large enough per stage.

Coverage and pay by company stage
StageCoverage (1 SE : N AEs)What changes for pay
Seed1:1More equity, less cash; SE is also implementation and docs
Series A1:2First dedicated SE hires
Series B1:3Plans formalise; pooled SE quotas appear
Growth1:4Segment-specific SE pools
Public1:5Specialist and overlay SEs; more cash, liquid equity

Reading the table

Early SEs cover fewer AEs but do far more than pre-sales. Later SEs cover more AEs with more support behind them. The AE plan changes less: near 50/50 at every stage.

Figures are medians drawn from placement records, offer letters and employer briefs across the last 12 months, expressed as 25th–75th percentile ranges. Base is fixed cash; OTE is base plus variable at 100% attainment, excluding equity. Read the full methodology.
