Guide · SE vs AE

How SEs and AEs split a deal

Four ways to credit the same closed deal to two people, and what each rewards.

Updated 24 September 2026 · Data collected 1 January – 8 August 2026

The AE is almost always credited with 100% of the deal. The SE is credited through one of four models: full credit on supported deals, a shared percentage, a pooled team quota, or MBOs. In our data, SE variable is split about 50% (modelled from our national dataset) on revenue and 50% (modelled from our national dataset) on MBOs.

What works in practice

Most plans mix a pooled revenue number with a smaller MBO. The pool ties the SE to the whole team's result; the MBO pays for work the pool doesn't see, such as enablement or proof-of-concept quality. Pure per-deal credit tends to break once one SE covers several AEs.

Frequently asked questions

Do sales engineers get credit for the AE's deals?

Usually yes, but not in the same way. Most SEs are credited against the combined quota of the AEs they support, not deal by deal.

What is an MBO in SE compensation?

A management-by-objectives target — such as certifications, demo quality or enablement work — that pays part of an SE's variable independently of revenue.
